Six Effective Business Time Management Tips and Techniques for Improving Productivity In Any Economy
Effective time management is a challenge for everyone. Each of us has the same amount of time in a day. How we each manage our time is unique to who we are.
Are you using your time the best way possible or are you squandering it?
Over the years, I have been fascinated with business time management. I am always interested in how I can be even more productive in the day. I have found some incredibly beneficial ways to improve my productivity. You can as well.
Following are Six Effective Business Time Management Tips and Techniques to help you manage your time more effectively.
- Decide. Decide that effective time management is an important objective to improve upon. If you do not decide to consciously manage your time effectively, you will not do so.
- Important Things First - Make lists and prioritize them. What is most important? What must be done now? What can wait? What is really only "busy-work" with little or no real value? Do what matters most first.
- Guard your time from yourself. Do you have a burning desire to run a personal errand during "green time"? Can it wait? Avoid running errands during "green time". "Green time" is the time where you can easily be speaking with a Customer instead of engaging in something you can do during "non-green time". Consider the real cost of your most productive time - your "green time". Need a break? Take 10 minutes instead of 30.
- Guard your time from others. Do you find yourself suffering from numerous interruptions to your day because team members stop by to share ideas, ask your advice, shoot the crap? Set up office hours. The best thinking takes time to arrive at. Remove the potential for disruptions by guarding your time from others as much as possible.
- Manage your energy. Whatever your field, manage your energy appropriately. Need to write a long report with a lot of detail? Write it in the morning. Need to really pound the phone to make sales happen - make the calls in the morning. Save the afternoon for "low brain power" or lower-energy activities.
- Take time out to recharge. Need a break? Sometimes a 10 minute walk or a short-term change of scenery is all you need to recharge. Get up and get out. Then quickly get back to work.
Why is effective time management important in a down economy? The answer is obvious. No one can tell for sure how long the downturn will last. One thing is for certain... What you do now will make a difference in the future. Use your time wisely to maximize your performance and add value to your team and organization.
